The first unforgettable trip
to Great Britain
to the Royal School of Canterbury
took place from July 10 to July 24, 2011

Путешествие в Великобританию в Королевскую школу Кэнтербери

Not everyone can get the chance to wander through the corridors of legendary magic school Hogwarts where the famous Harry Potter studied! FLC Reward provided this opportunity for 15 children who had an unforgettable journey to the Royal School of Canterbury in Britain this summer.

Путешествие в Великобританию в Королевскую школу КэнтербериChildren left a hot Volgograd summer and got into a cool, old-fashioned, prim but inviting with its aristocratic beauty and fragrant aromas of limes and magnolias: England. The sense of being expected and pleased appeared at once: right at the start our group was met by an energetic and affable team of the St Giles School which could be distinguished among the crowd of corporate yellow T-shirts with the school logo.

The first impressions of England could be described by one word: amazing! Everything was unusual and new: cool and dull weather in midsummer, gorgeous one-storied houses covered greenery, left-handed traffic…

Путешествие в Великобританию в Королевскую школу КэнтербериThe school surpassed all our expectations. We lived on the territory of a middle-aged abbey in the centre of the ancient town of Canterbury surrounded by a huge number of flowering plants and a great lawn. In spite of original architecture remaining the same as it was seen by the Knights Round Table and the English lords and ladies, the habitual modern comfort awaited us inside.

Classes were held on the territory of the famous Canterbury Cathedral where the first chapter of “Harry Potter” was filmed. So everyone could feel like a student of the magical school. Everything facilitated quick and qualitative language acquisition including: friendly professional English teachers, the modern teaching methodology, and the surrounding atmosphere. Daily classes were held in small international groups in which Russian was completely excluded, and every child was attended to the maximum. Classrooms were equipped with modern equipment including interactive boards and Wi-Fi. All the children were provided necessary teaching resources.

But life doesn’t only consist of studies. In St Giles children’s camp we had not only high-quality language instruction, but also a rich entertainment program such as: table tennis, basketball, volleyball, football, rugby, movie night, theater, karaoke, and disco. Children actively participated in the entertainment and found new friends from different countries including: France, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Croatia, Turkey etc.

Путешествие в Великобританию в Королевскую школу КэнтербериAll of the school’s guests had an opportunity to see with their own eyes the spellbinding beauties of England. They visited the famous cliffs of Dover, Brighton Beach, Hastings Dungeon , Leeds Castle, and of course London. London surprised us with wonderful sunny weather. We could take photos of Trafalgar Square, Koven Garden, and Windsor Castle; walk in Royal Park; enjoy the view of London with a bird's-eye view on the famous Ferris wheel London Eye; and compare time on the legendary Big Ben.

Upon completion of the course every student got a International School Certificate in a festive atmosphere with the applause of all the children and teachers.

Is it possible to forget such a wonderful adventure? All participants of our trip are welcome to come back to the Royal School of Canterbury. We invite all schoolchildren who learn English in the Foreign Language Centre Reward to join us in the new trip to Canterbury next summer! Well, the children who had the opportunity to visit royal England this summer gladly shared their impressions.

The head of the group,
Deputy Director of FLC Reward Deryabkina Olga Vasilievna

The participants of the trip gladly shared their impressions:

Dolaev Aliy, 15 years old, lyceum № 9, Volgograd
I really enjoyed it. I made many new friends from different countries and filled up my vocabulary. There were many foreigners, so I almost always spoke in English.

Haritonov Anthon, 17 years old, school № 3, the working village Gorodische
It is a great school! Everything was comfortable, excursions were interesting, staff was cheerful, and classes were interesting. Communicating with foreigners was cool! I was pleased with the trip, and I would go again if it’s possible!

Baranov Daniil, 17 years old, school of Maxim Gorky № 3, Sredniaya Ahtuba
I really liked the camp: wonderful teachers and everything. There was a smorgasbord, and rooms were cleaned every day. I liked beautiful old buildings and lots of greenery. I didn’t sit around, as I was always busy with something interesting. On the whole, the camp was cool! If I could, I would have went there to relax and learn English my entire vacation.

Bashbakov Alexander, 15 years old, school № 1, the working village Gorodische
I liked everything. There was tasty food, good rooms, interesting classes and excursions.

Chumachenko Helena, 16 years old, school ‘Vaida’, Volgograd
We lived in a beautiful place, met interesting and most importantly different people from different countries. We visited many picturesque places. Sightseeing from many centuries ago. Perhaps London only left this impression because you can see a great mix of old and modern styles there. Leeds Castle was very impressive due to its simplicity and convenience. Castles in England don’t look like palaces in Russia. The trip to England is a great way to meet new people, learn English, and travel to the past. Note: if you're going to go to England in the summer, do not think that you will suffice with a warm jacket! The climate in this beautiful place is unpredictable; the temperature doesn’t exceed 20? С even in mid-July. So you should take more warm clothes to make your journey the most pleasurable.

Truhanova Marina, 16 years old, lyceum of Gagarin № 5, Volgograd
The hardest thing is to describe in a few words all the greatness of an unforgettable trip which was full of amazing events and sensations. The only thing I can say specifically is that I had never experienced more emotions in a such short period of time. England is a really unique country. It is unlikely you’ll find a place in Europe where it is only 15 ?С at noon in the middle of July. Perhaps the weather was the only bad thing, all the rest was great. I especially liked the organization of the trip – even 3 flights in a day were not as dire as it seemed. Everything was thought out and planned well, literally to the last detail. The school where we lived and studied was located in a one of the most charming towns I’d ever seen – Canterbury. Honestly, I’d never visited cleaner and cozier town. I should add that the contingent was also surprisingly pleasant. Everybody was very polite and affable like the real English lords: children, teachers, etc. For 2 weeks we visited many interesting places each of which should be spoken about in detail and separately. But I will say in general: the feelings are unforgettable!

Podstavko Stepan, 13 years old, school № 12, Volzhskiy
I really liked living and studying in St Giles International. We went on tours, ate tasty food and stayed in rooms with good facilities. I talked to foreigners a lot and I’ve gained more knowledge in English.

Pavlushina Tatiana, 15 years old, lyceum № 10, Volgograd
The trip was wonderful! It was a unique possibility to communicate with people from different countries, to significantly improve my English, to sightsee, and to just have a great time. Teachers, students and everyone else were very friendly to each other. The only negative thing was the changeable weather, because it was often cold. Even so everything was great. I’ll really miss it.

Marcinovskiy Artiom, 15 years old, school №3, Dubovka
Everything was cool. I especially liked the three meals a day, as a smorgasbord. Tours were interesting, I mostly liked London. Rooms were big and comfortable; and the school was unusual and beautiful. The practice of the language at a conversational level was very good because everybody spoke English.

Anohin Alexander, 14 years old, lyceum of Gagarin № 35, Volgograd
I liked the camp from the beginning to the end. Learning English with people from other countries was very interesting. Also I liked the weather and the town itself – it is clean. The weather was unusual in sharp contrast to our usual hot, but it was a good thing. I would like to go here again in the next year.
